Locomotion by Jacqueline Woodson, published 2003
Quite a simple read, but it'll make you cry and laugh and want to hug a kid. Maybe your kid, or maybe not. It's all written from Lonnie's point of view in poems. Lonnie is a 5th grader who lives in the city away from his younger sister. A fire took their parents and they've bounced from group homes to foster care. Lonnie asks questions a hurting 5th grader would ask, and does everything he can do to be with his sister more.
Like I said, it's simple, quick, but read it because it'll make you cry.
