W is for Wind

is for Wind.

The obvious nature of this post won't be so obvious to everyone. My family and I live on the plains, and to go a day without wind is unusual.

My mind ends up personifying the wind, whether breeze or gale, and yesterday the boys and I played under a large cottonwood tree - the wind blowing hard. A few times I looked up and listened to the shaking leaves, it sounded like clapping hands. I'm looking forward to when that same tree lets its cottonseed go; if the wind is in attendance, it will seem like snow.

Not only does the wind seem to make human the things around us, it should also remind us of what gave us life in the beginning.

According to the Genesis story, the spirit (breath, wind) of God hovered over the waters before the earth was formed; and before the Adam took the first breath, the LORD put his spirit (breath) into him. I'm reminded of these things when I see trees bending in a storm or grass sighing in the breeze.

The wind blows where it wants to, so it is of anyone born of the Spirit - so Jesus said. A beautiful picture of freedom.

The wind could be one of the things I miss the most about the beach. It's a difficult smell to get used to, but the sandy/fishy smell is a favorite of mine. The blast coming across the ocean is powerful, and if you dig a hole and hide from it, the silence too comes alive and you can hear the wind speaking in reply.
